D-Link plans Apple TV competitor

updated 08:15 pm EDT, Fri August 10, 2007

D-Link media streamer

D-Link is planning to unveil a competitor to the Apple TV that provides the same basic purpose -- streaming media wirelessly from home computers to the television set-top -- at about the same price: $300. The device will likely become only the second such media streamer (behind the Apple TV) that supports 802.11n wireless networking, offering enough bandwidth for delivering rich content to high-definition sets quickly. Reuters reports "D-Link already sells these media devices, but they run at slower speeds than the Apple product, which is ahead of the rest of the industry. (Company spokesman Les Goldberg) said the new product will sell for $300, the same as the entry-level Apple TV model and go on sale in the United States during the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter -- before it starts selling it in other countries."

    Finally,

It took someone long enough. I guess that's the whole point of keeping development secret - so you can be the frontrunner. My thinking has this helping to lead the home media library to become more commonplace. And U say?

    sales

anyone have any idea how well appletv is selling - does it have the 'critical mass' that ipod has? here in the uk, i don't believe they've shifted many, since there's no content available.

    SO...

What it takes to be a competitor is to have 802.11n networking? Their other products, which apparently have existed prior to the AppleTV, don't compete because of this?

    Re: sales

After the initial surge (which all things apple go through), I don't think its been selling through the roof. It was completely ignored in the earnings reports.

    From the Apple 2.0 blog

Apple certainly didn't provide much Apple TV guidance yesterday. In the nearly hour-long conference call with reporters and analysts, the issue of Apple TV sales came up exactly once, in this exchange with Apple's CFO:

    Harry Blount - Lehman Brothers

Could you give us a sense of Apple TV units? They are not discreetly (sic) broken out here.

    Peter Oppenheimer

We don’t announce that level of product detail.

    Harry Blount - Lehman Brothers

Okay, but it’s not included in the iPhone numbers, correct?

    Peter Oppenheimer

It is not, it’s a separate category. It’s reported in the other music category as an accessory. (transcript courtesy of SeekingAlpha)

Never mind that Oppenheimer was happy to go into that level of product detail when it came to the 1,764,000 Macintosh computers sold in the quarter, or the 9,815,000 iPods. Apple goes into product detail when it serves them and keeps things vague when it doesn't.

There's a long discussion on trying to take other numbers and inferring what the total would be. I've seen anywhere from 36000 to 200000.

    SLOW sales

They sold out of our store the first couple weeks, then stopped completely. We're hoping for an upswing during the Christmas period.

    D-Link?

D-Link wants to compete with the Apple TV?

Considering they make such colossal junk, I think Hasbro would stand a better chance a competing successfully.

    a "Hobby"

On most occasions Jobs called the AppleTV a "hobby". And if you own one, you'll know that it really is just that, a hobby device. Apart from Video podcasts, personal videos, music, and photos on your TV, it does not serve as what the name implies or what you may think it implies. It is under-featured and underpowered, and has very little content. Buy it if you are an Apple geek and like to poke around with technology, like me.

Oh… Although it is under-featured, many of the features it has are not available on other devices such as YouTube.

    thoughts

I do not think Apple internally ever thought this would initially be some record breaking product. First, it is a hard product to understand unless you see it. The only place you can see them is at an Apple Store or a friends house. Second, the market for the product is relatively limited.

With that said, I think the Apple TV is a great product. I do not own one, but I have played with one on a few occasions at an Apple store. If you are a person who has a large media collection on your computer, or a dedicated media server, the Apple TV is an ideal way to bring that media to your television.

I also do not understand why people are so interested in the numbers sold. Apple from the get go suggested the product would not be the next iPod.
