MS releases Vista Performance, Compatibility packs

updated 01:20 pm EDT, Wed August 8, 2007

Vista performance packs

Previously rumored, Microsoft has now officially released its Performance and Reliability and Compatibility and Reliability updates to Windows Vista. While not yet on Windows Update, the patches are nevertheless official, and address issues which have deterred many users from upgrading from earlier versions of Windows. The first of the two packs deals primarily with moving large files, which in some cases has taken inordinate amounts of time. It is also said to fix poor memory management, plus screensaver problems and losing TCP/IP when coming back from hibernation.

The Compatibility pack should offer the greatest help to gamers, since it at last remedies driver issues with Nvidia's G80-series video cards, and solves a collection of in-game visual glitches as well. Outside of gaming, playback quality has been improved for Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs on larger monitors, and a printer spooling bug has been eliminated.

    I *so* love this

Isn't it brilliant? You can have either "Performance and Reliability" or "Compatibility and Reliability" - god forbid you would expect ALL THREE of these things from an operating system! :)

Well, of course, if you did, you'd use a Mac in the first place.

    good to know

Actually, jarod, many of us Mac users do care what's happening in MS land. It helps one not look like an idiot in conversations with others when you have an idea of what's going on on the other side of the fence.

It's nice to know that with this update Vista is almost ready for release... oops I mean re-release.

    LOL good one!

I was just venting out. I'm actually MCSE and pissed at how I wasted my money on that trash. At the courses, they tell you... in order to pass the exams, ASSUME that everything works as advertised!

    dang that's serious

those were serious issues, I wonder what other serious issues have not been addressed in this update. Moving large files!! was an issue?? in Vista?? That's nuts!

    Re: I so love this

You apparently don't realize you can install both updates so you can get all three?

Oh and t suhail, maybe you don't keep up with other peoples issues with Macs, but large file copying has been an issue with Mac OS X over the years.
