iPhone used to make iLife '08 sales pitch

updated 10:15 am EDT, Wed August 8, 2007

iLife '08 push via iPhone

iPhone owners attempting to sync with their computer after yesterday's string of Apple announcements may receive an unexpected surprise. Using desktop integration, the sync will bring up a pop-up (right, below) promoting iLife '08, and specifically iPhoto, which has features such as events, selective camera imports and one-click sharing via .Mac. The tactic is an unusually aggressive one for Apple, which has typically refrained from inserting ads into essential tasks. Users can select a checkbox to prevent the pop-up from re-appearing.

    It's 'valuable info'...

    ...not a sales pitch! :-)

    Whatever...

I got this with my iWork '06. In fact I received a double dose. My aim was off and instead of clicking Pages in the Dock I clicked Keynote, so I quickly clicked on Pages to bring it up.

    You know what I did?

I clicked on "Don't tell me about iWork '08 again" before clicking cancel.

    Twice.

    Oh the agony!

But this is nowhere as near the irritation I get when I accidently bring up the sorry Verizon web thing on my sorry Motorola phone. And that stupid "Say a command" voice recognition thing that always get activated my mistake. I tell it to "Kiss my azz" but nothing ever happens.

    Not iPhone so much

It is the underlying applications. Just starting iPhoto generates this upgrade message. I suspect this is an artifact of that rather than an intentional iPhone message.

    bad style

this is beneath Apple. The lack of this sort of thing is one reason I like Apple. I hope this doesn't become common with their apps.

    Not new

Apple's been doing this with iPhoto for a long time. Every time they release a new version, they nag you to upgrade. My old systems with iLife '05 kept nagging me to upgrade to '06.

    iPhone is unrelated

Starting iPhoto brings up the message. If you have iPhoto set to open when you plug in the iPhone, and that's the first time you see the message, I can see how you would be confused. But the iPhone really has nothing to do with it.

As stated, its nothing new, and it is beneath what Apple portends to be. I don't recall there being an option to say "Let me know when you offer a paid upgrade to this software!" in the preferences, but I might have just missed it.

    call back

Yes I got this when opening iPhoto (4) today. Presumably that means that iPhoto is calling back to the mothership.

Isn't there usually a big outcry when M$ programs do this kind of thing?
