AirPort Extreme Base Station goes gigabit

AirPort Extreme goes giga

While attention has been focused on the newly-launched iMacs and iLife '08, Apple quietly upgraded its AirPort Extreme Base Station overnight. The unit now has gigabit LAN and WAN Ethernet ports, but is otherwise functionally identical, having features such as 802.11n and USB device sharing. It costs $180 and is said to be shipping with 24 hours; it can also be acquired through a Teacher Bundle sold at the Apple Education Store.

Other products have received minor, cosmetic updates. Both the wired ($50) and wireless ($70) Mighty Mice are now coated in white on the sides, rather than gray. The Apple Remote ($30) is actually entirely the same, but the wording of its packaging is said to have been modified for "North America compliancy reasons."

    iSight?

Dont think there will be a new iSight As all new macs apart from Mac pro have it built in. Couldnt see the point myself. I like the way apple pop new things out tho so surprisingly.

    Re: isight

Mac minis and Mac pros do not have iSights - I want to buy one right now, but cannot. Though I agree the market has severely diminished so I can't blame Apple for not having one.

    iSight issue

This is actually a very serious issue for many people who have Mac systems without iSights and want them. There simply is no elegant solution. The best bet is the iChatUSB software combined with a Maccam USB driver, but the quality is always lower because for some reason most of the cameras don't work smoothly at full resolution. I don't know if the fault is the Macam driver or iChatUSB, but the result is you have to set the cameras to a lower resolution. Does it work? Yes, is it the "Apple Experience", no, and it won't be until Apple realizes that people still need the iSight or an equivalent solution.

This is certainly a problem Apple shouldn't have ignored for this length of time.

You could always buy an iSight on eBay. Seems to be plenty of them there.
