AMD FireGL Vx600 Cards

AMD this morning revamped its ATI-branded FireGL pro graphics cards with new models based on the technology first seen in the Radeon HD 2900. Every card shares the same unified shader model that can adapt to pixels or vertexes on the fly and provides full feature support for both DirectX 10 and more recent versions of OpenGL. A mid-range card is up to three times faster at 3D modeling as its previous generation V5200 equivalent, AMD contends. The top-range FireGL V8650 is also the first card in its class to ship with 2GB of video memory and is said to give artists and engineers the chance to produce more complex 3D models.

The V8650 has the same 320 unified shader processors of the Radeon HD 2900 and is joined by the V8600, which cuts costs by halving memory to 1GB without sacrificing features. Three more inexpensive and single-slot workstation cards will also be available with the V5600 and V7600 sporting 512MB of memory and the basic V3600 shipping with 256MB.

All the cards will officially support Linux and Windows, and should be available as stand-alones as well as part of complete workstations in September. Prices start at $299 for the V3600 but jump to $599 for the V5600 and $999 for the V7600. The top V8000-series cards sell for $1,899 (1GB) and $2,799 (2GB) respectively.
