Toshiba M600 and S5 Soon

Toshiba is readying a pair of notebook designs for both frequent travelers and professionals, the system builder has revealed at a press gathering. The Portégé M600 (pictured) should bridge the differences between the company's larger home systems and its ultraportables, bringing the familiar white and black shape of the Satellite series to a 13.3-inch compact system. The PC also promises distinctly home-friendly features such as a 1.3-megapixel webcam and Vista Home Premium

Despite its freshness, however, the system will not be based on the newer Santa Rosa architecture, Toshiba says: the 2GHz Core 2 Duo runs on the earlier 667MHz bus and with Intel GMA 950 graphics. The system nonetheless ships with a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM and should be available first in Korea with a display lid in either Cool White Pearl ($1,515) or Onyx Blue ($1,732).

Also in the works is a larger but faster system, Toshiba says. The 15.4-inch Tecra S5 is targeted at mobile pros and is powered by a 256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 170M optimized for 3D modeling and similar tasks. It also steps up to a much faster 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo on an 800MHz bus and includes important workplace-related touches ranging from a fingerprint reader to a serial port for administrating older server PCs. Like the M600, Toshiba will also offer the S5 with 1GB of RAM and a 160GB disk but replaces Vista Home Premium with Business. It should be available now in Korea for $2,166 and is likely to arrive in the US with a different configuration. [via AVING]
