Amp'd Mobile Prexar Deal

Customers of Amp'd Mobile facing the imminent shutdown of their service learned today that they will have at least a momentary reprieve through a new deal with the independent carrier Prexar Mobile, according to an announcement today. The northeastern provider says it has bought aspects of Amp'd Mobile's service and has developed a system that will let subscribers of the discontinued network switch over to Prexar seamlessly simply by plugging in their number and choosing a subscription plan. Customers will not be forced into a new contract or to drop their existing phones, Prexar vows.

Crucially, however, the new service will drop the media download and streaming features that have defined Amp'd and may also strip out use of the provider's EVDO Internet access despite operating on Verizon's network. SMS texting is also optional but will start with 100 free messages for those converting from Amp'd, Prexar says. The service plans themselves vary in price between $40 and $180 depending on minutes but include unlimited US long distance.

Though Prexar says it will be the first to offer a clear migration path for Amp'd soon to be defunct service, the company notes that it does not have exclusive rights to Amp'd and that several rivals are still in talks to buy Amp'd outright.
