Microsoft: Apple a distant second

Microsoft: Apple is tiny

Microsoft is said to be downplaying Apple claims of a jump in Mac sales in the last quarter. CEO Steve Ballmer is reported to observe that while there are millions of Macs in existence, Microsoft expects to acquire its billionth Windows user by 2008. "If you stop and just think about that, parse that for a second," Ballmer says, "by the end of our fiscal year '08, there will be more PCs running Windows in the world than there are automobiles, which is at least to me kind of a mind-numbing concept."

COO Kevin Turner is said to have made the most direct comparison, specifically in reference to sales of Windows Vista. The OS has so far sold in excess of 60 million copies, 40 million of which shipped within the first two months. "By our math, we eclipsed the entire installed base of Apple in the first five weeks that this product shipped," Turner says.

the last time i remember ballmer get so defensive is when he said the iphone would never sell because the keyboard sucked, etc etc. so it's pretty obvious they must be shaking in their boots.

Everybody knows MS is big

... so why are they making such great effort to point out how much bigger they are than their "distant second" competitor. Could it be that they still see Apple as a threat?

Windows is weakening

At least in what I have observed, Windows' grip on the world is weakening. I've noticed far more people buying Macs now than ever before. Then, there's Dell who now sells computers pre-loaded with Ubuntu.

about the competition. The leader never talks about the competition because it gives them credibility. That's one of the big no-no's in the advertising business. There's a reason why you NEVER see Pepsi product mentioned in a Coca-Cola ad.

So just clam up and get back to work, Ballmer.

EXCELLENT POST!!

Yes, M$ has made more Sedans then Apple has made sports cars, and I for one am happy with that!!

I rather pay more to get more, rather than to claim we just produced more. Now what is it that i remember reading that said something to the fact that Apple has half the profit that M$ does with only 7% market share??

So while M$ has to labor hard, we work smarter? They do 90% more work and make only twice the profit for it???

Thank you Apple for working smarter and producing the Tech Bling of all Tech Bling!

I still like hybrid's quote better though. $1 menu that has junk food with killer additives, or pay for the finest foods prepared by the worlds best chefs?

well, the numbers are pretty much true i guess. Kind of like how the iPod eclipses the crappy Zune.

As a side note, if you use f%$& etc. in your messages, your intend will still be clear without being quite as crude.

Bottom of the Barrel?

I wonder if MS is feeling the heat for (possibly) reaching the end of it's era of dominance. They're being pressured by Google; Apple's a hot product and market share is growing; Vista's sales are good, but how much of that is sales to vendors vs. customer adoption?

Is Vista more than painted over rust? If it isn't, that could be bad news for the long term for MS as they'll struggle to show that they can be a leader in the tech field and attract (and retain) talent to keep their market position.

... is quaking in his boots. Why else does he keep mentioning a competitor that he considers irrelevant.

He is desperate for relevance of Microsoft himself, and instead of insanely great products (which Balmer could never imagine), all he's got left is innuendo and soudbytes.

Balmer will effectively witness, and be the cause, of the downfall of Microsoft - Bill was smart to exit stage left when he did. Can't wait for the day that Balmer will be doing all the CES keynotes. That must be fun.

Likewise, can't wait for Steve Jobs to do his first CES keynote - that will be more fun.

I have to say there is one thing I do agree with him on,

a billion copies of DOS or WINDOWS have been "sold" around the world - now that is really "mind numbing".

I wonder how many years of human progress has been delayed by that? Thankfully as others have said, WINDOWS will soon be consigned as a wrong turn in human technological evolution...

Ballmonkey and his boys must be really peeing in their pants...NO ONE mentions competition unless things are really bad on their side.

MS is DEAD. This is a fact.

Vista sales may be counted only because of channel inventories.

Mac market share has never been higher in real terms.

The iPod/iTunes duo continues to CRUSH the competition, including the ridiculous Zune.

The iPhone has just shown Windows Mobile users how weak and outdated they are, with the fastest selling high-end mobile in history.

Again, Ballmonkey only says it because he knows MS is gonna be in the pit in a few years. GO MONKEY!

Wymer must not remember the Pepsi challenge. Coke and Pepsi repeatedly mention each other's product... I've seen it in dozen's of ad campaign's over the years.

Apple ran a picture of an Intel processor tied to the back of a turtle, back when they were still hyping up PowerPC.

SO, give it a rest on the never mention your competitors...there is no hard and fast rule, at least in the US. Some countries have laws against it, in terms of advertising.

the pepsi challenge was pepsi challenging coke. the second place always sets their sights on the winners. the leaders never talk about the second place.

microsoft commercials don't mention macs: mac commercials mention microsoft

ipod commericals don't mention zune

that's the hard and fast rule, and is rarely broken.
