Fujifilm rolls out designer Z-series cameras

Fujifilm Z10fd and Z100fd

Fujifilm today began a full sweep of its camera line and started with major replacements for its Z-series ultra-compact cameras. The 7.2-megapixel, 3X zoom Z10fd (shown) radically restyles the compact with a unique, asymmetrically curved design and extremely bright colors ranging from Sunset Orange to Wasabi Green. Changes are also more than just cosmetic versus earlier models: a new automatic red eye removal eliminates one of the most common artifacts of flash shots, and users can now use a single slot for either Fujifilm's preferred xD cards or more universal SD and SDHC storage.

Other software features also cater to the younger audience likely to pick up the camera, the company says. Turning on Blog Mode automatically creates a 640x480 or 320x240 copy of a full-size image optimized for posting online. Use of the flash is also intelligent with either an i-Flash feature that lowers the intensity of the flash to avoid washing out images, or a Dual Shot mode that provides versions of an image with and without flash for comparison. The Z10fd also brings in Fujifilm's face detection and high-ISO stability modes and should be available in late September for $200.

More serious users in Asia will also have the choice of the Z100fd. In addition to upgrading the sensor to 8 megapixels, the black-and-silver model adds 5X zoom and a physical sensor-shift stabilization mode to the features of the Z10fd. It should be available in Japan and other local territories during September for the equivalent of $333, but hasn't been announced for North America.
