Toshiba HD DVD bonus
In apparent counter-response to a Sony initiative, Toshiba has decided to extend its "Perfect Offer" deal until September 30th. Until then, people who buy a Toshiba HD DVD player are eligible to send in for five free movies from a list of 15, including the likes of Apollo 13, Blazing Saddles and Casablanca. This follows a recent announcement by the Blu-Ray Disc Association, also offering five movies from a list of 21.
This in turn was likely triggered by HD DVD's continuing price advantage, cemented by the permanent price drop of the Toshiba HD-A2 player to $300.
It is still unclear which HD format is poised to dominate the market -- the promotional groups for both Blu-Ray and HD DVD are claiming supremacy, based on facts that may be skewed. HD DVD is said to have faster growth, but numerous reports have omitted sales of the Sony PlayStation 3, which reads Blu-Ray movies in addition to playing games and browsing the web. It has also long been cheaper than many Blu-Ray players at $500-600.
