Orange offers budget SPV C200 smartphone

Orange SPV C200

The French branch of European carrier Orange today rolled out the SPV C200. Standing in contrast to premium devices, the C200 is intended for bringing smartphone-class features to a lower price. Its candybar design offers only a keypad and joystick (rather than a keyboard) for control but is preloaded with Windows Mobile 5 for better Internet access and document viewing than the custom programs that often come with more limited handsets.

The Amoi-made cellphone also keeps features in check by offering features similar to mid-range feature phones rather than the premium additions of pro-oriented devices. Internet linkups are provided through EDGE rather than costly 3G; a 1.3-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, and six hours of calling time round out the features.

Orange offers the phone through its service for as little as 9 Euros ($12) with a two-year plan, but sells the communicator for shorter terms at a higher price. Its particular tri-band GSM access is likely to limit the device's use to European networks. [via Unwired View]
