eMachines turns from AMD to Intel for budget desktops

updated 08:20 am EDT, Fri June 29, 2007

eMachines June 2007

Gateway's budget label eMachines today reworked its T-series desktops for the summer. Unlike previous Intel-based models this year, the new models rely on AMD's platform and NVIDIA's GeForce 6150 for relatively fast integrated graphics; they all also feature DVD burners, eMachines adds. The company keeps its base $350 (after rebate) price intact by shipping the entry T3616 with a 2GHz Sempron, 512MB of RAM, a 120GB disk, and Vista Home Basic for those who only need essentials.

The mid-range T5062 ($400) adds consdierably more features, according to the company: a single-core 2.4GHz Athlon 64 is also supported by a much larger 1GB of RAM that gives enough memory to handle Vista Home Premium. Users are also treated to a larger 160GB drive and a 15-in-1 card reader. Finishing the line, the T5230 ($450) boosts speed with a 2.32GHz Athlon 64 X2 dual-core chip and also boosts storage significanly to 250GB.

Like most eMachines systems, the three new T models are destined for retail shops and should be available by this weekend in the US; monitors are extra but start at $100 for a CRT and $180 for a wide 17-inch LCD.
