AT&T: iPod gear on iPhone
Guidance from AT&T suggests that for many owners, accessories previously bought for iPods will in fact work with the iPhone, though possibly under severe limitations. The company states that while many products with the "Made for iPod" branding are compatible with the iPhone's 30-pin connector, the wireless broadcasts the phone emits may cause audio interference. Apple has in fact created a warning screen to this effect, which will appear whenever a device without "Works with iPhone" certification is connected. The screen will caution users that their experience may be sub-optimal, and offer a solution.
The solution proposed, however, may render the iPhone useless under particular circumstances. By switching to Airplane Mode, interference from a device is eliminated; but because this shuts off transmitters, phone calls and web browsing will be impossible. AT&T notes that it should be safe to at least attempt using non-certified accessories, because this does not void an iPhone's warranty.

no surprise

Nobody should really be surprised by this. After all, the interference ANY Cingular/AT&T phone has on audio equipment is very well known. By I wonder, is it possible to turn off the phone by leave on the WiFi on the iPhone. It appears "airplane mode" turns them both off. It's Cingular's phone signal that interferes with audio equipment. The WiFi signal should be fine.

Maybe People will turn their phones off to use the FM transmitter and then we won't have so many morons trying to drive, take notes, talk, drink a latte, eat a bagel, put on makeup/shave, do their taxes, etc. while they are driving. Then they can use the visual voicemail to catch up when they are done driving without killing the rest of us ...
