Only 60 iPhones sold at AT&T on Wall Street

AT&T iPhone supply
AT&T's retail store on Wall Street sold its entire supply if iPhones today, which consisted of just 60 devices, according to one report. Barron's Online notes that the phones quickly sold out, but that AT&T offered all those still in line the chance to order a phone for delivery in seven business days, or three business days for an extra $15. The store also ran out of compatible Bluetooth headsets, but allowed a line to form for hours outside that was 2-3 times longer than the number of available iPhones, according to the report.

Negative headline

Pretty negative sounding headline for a story about a store selling out of all the iPhones it had...

I was number 68 in line at an AT&T store in Cambridge (MA). A bit more than half way through the line, the 8 GB models sold out. That suggests similar stocks.
I waited in line for an hour and a half. Why does it take 90 minutes to sell 30 phones? Because they were doing a credit check for Every Single Person. Even though it isn't required to do it in advance.
I waited in line for an hour and a half. Why did they let 100 people stand in line for 60 phones? Because they wanted us all to order them for delivery from them.
AT&T sales guys wanting their cut of everything made this a miserable experience from me. I ordered my 8 GB iPhone tonight from the online Apple store.

Home of 4.5 Million high rolling visitors. Most of them here next week. 40 telephones but line was much longer. Same obnoxious AT&T bunch I mentioned last week. Let the long line stand all day. Ordered online as usual. It seems AT&T locals have not got the new image down yet. Roughly 2000 stores at 40 each is 80000 phones. Where are the other 292000? Better sell early Monday.

Maybe they let people stand in line because there's no guarantee everyone in line is actually going to buy an iPhone. Maybe half just wanted to look at it to see if they wanted it.
And how dare AT&T try to actually get you to buy from them. Its not like they're in the business of selling phones, or making money or anything else. They should just have put a big sign out front that says "Just order from the Apple store, don't bother us!".

Well, one AT&T store near me (the one I went to) had over 80 people in line and they said they had enough for everyone. I was 13th in line - got an 8 GB. : )
So, 40 per store in not an accurate number and is not representative of all 2,000 stores.

We had 140 lined up for 20 phones at a store serving a population of 140,000.
The Stad ffailed to tell the queue taht they would not get a phone untile they were already sold out, at 7:15 PM. Much yelling and screaming at the manager, and a lot of pissed off people, many of which had been in line for 10 plus hours.
Apple blew this big time... they lost more customers and unleashed bad PR the likes of which they will not easily recover.

It wasn't until 7:15 PM when they actually sold out, that the store staff announced, to the remainder of the queue, that they would not get a phone. Much yelling and screaming at the manager followed, and a lot of pissed off people, many of which had been in line for 10 plus hours left in disgust.
