HP Pavilions June 2007

Countering Dell, HP has issued a refresh of its Pavilion desktops with extra speed, including some firsts for the industry. The Intel-based m8120n tower is the company's first quad-core mainstream system, shipping with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad; it should also be one of the first home systems to ship with 3GB of memory in standard trim, HP notes. Its media center origins continue with a TV tuner, dual 320GB hard drives, and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo for browsing in the living room.

The m8120n is roughly matched with an AMD equivalent, the m8100n, that swaps in a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 5600+ and a smaller 500GB maximum storage for a lower price of $940.

Upgrades have also taken place for the company's mainstream a6000-series PCs. The lone Intel model, the a6120n, runs on a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo and carries 2GB of RAM along with a 320GB hard disk; HP braces it on either side with the more frugal a6110n, which switches to an Athlon 64 X2 4400+, and the a6130n, which includes the 3GB of RAM from the higher-end desktops, a faster Athlon 64 X2 5000+ chip, and a larger 400GB drive. All three should sell for under $1,000, HP says.

Rounding out the launches are two updates to HP's Pavilion Slimline PCs as well as its budget Compaq Presario systems. The former is split into basic and deluxe models. The s3100n offers just essentials with an Athlon 64 X2 4000+, 1GB of RAM, and a 250GB drive, while the s3120n adds a slightly faster 4200+ processor, 2GB of memory, a 320GB drive, Firewire, and a TV tuner. Presarios are similarly divided. HP equips the SR5110NX with a 3800+ chip, 512MB of memory, and a 120GB drive, and upgrades the SR5120NX with doubled RAM and a 200GB disk. Their pricing is currently unknown.
