Iomega rolls out portable, external hard drives

updated 11:45 am EDT, Tue June 26, 2007

Iomega external drives

Iomega has targeted the world of external storage today with two new products, now on sale. The first is the eGo Portable Hard Drive, designed for laptops. It stores up to 160GB, and connects to computers through a USB 2.0 port, from which it also draws its power. Special traits include a curved, "cherry-red" chassis, DropGuard disk protection, and a bundled copy of EMC Retrospect HD for manual or automatic backups. The eGo is priced at $160.

Desktop owners, meanwhile, can make use of the eSATA/USB 2.0 Professional Hard Drive. As its name implies, users can rely on a standard USB 2.0 connection, or take advantage of eSATA to transfer at speeds as high as 3Gbps. Up to 500GB of data can be held, and like the eGo, EMC software (Retrospect Express) is provided for a variety of backups. The drive is housed in a silver-colored case, and ships for $210.
