AT&T officially rolls out Video Share live video

updated 10:50 am EDT, Tue June 19, 2007

ATT Video Share

AT&T today officially launched its Video Share service, representing the first time its subscribers can stream live video from their phones courtesy of a 3G Internet connection. The service is currently limited to one-way video calls with two-way voice but allows for features that would have been previously impossible with the carrier's network, such as showing a family event in real-time or asking for advice. Certain devices also include front or swivel cameras that allow for self-portraits.

Launching initially in Atlanta, Dallas, and San Antonio, the service requires certain phones with HSDPA Internet access such as the Samsung A717 or the LG CU500v and costs $5 per month for 25 minutes of video or $10 for a full hour. Subscribers can also choose instead to pay 35 cents a minute, AT&T says. Video Share should expand to the rest of the provider's 3G-capable network in late July and in the long run will include more than just cellphones, allowing live video to be shared across PCs and Internet-based TV service as well.
