VMware pre-orders for $40

VMware today announced that users can now pre-order VMware Fusion, which enables Mac users to simultaneously run Mac, Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris-based applications without rebooting. The company said that customers can pre-order VMware Fusion for $40 until the product is generally available--sometime by the end of August. It said that the full retail price will be $80. VMware Fusion Beta 4, which is available today, delivers seamless Windows Integration with Unity, which enables users to run Windows XP applications directly on their Mac desktops, providing full integration with Mac keyboard shortcuts and Mac OS X's Expose. In addition, the VMware Fusion Launch Palette provides access to all Windows applications, which can be saved to the Mac OS X Dock.

VMware Fusion also automatically detects users' existing Boot Camp installations to allow Mac OS X to run alongside Windows XP or Vista with no additional setup as well as offers accelerated 3-D graphics support -- allowing users to run DirectX 8.1 applications and play select DirectX 8.1 games from within Windows XP virtual machines.

Other features include Virtual SMP support; a snapshot/backup feature to capture and save the current state of a running virtual machine; a VMware converter ¸ migrate current Windows PC disks; and "Battery pass-through" to monitor the battery life of their Macs from within non-Mac virtual machines

    Setup is a pain

Setup is a pain and the instructions for getting a virtual XP system up and running is non-existant. Parallels is way easier to use. I've tried both and I've gotten parallels to work with XP and Vista. VMware I can't even get windows to work as I don't see how you even start to set it up unlike parallels which takes you through an easy step by step setup and even asks what version of Windows you would like to install.

    setup is a breeze

On my MacBook Pro with Bootcamp already installed, I double-clicked the installer and it automatically recognized my WindowsXP install. Wahllah....pretty much all there is to it.

Now I have the best of both worlds, I can boot natively into XP or run Windows apps just like Mac apps using Fusion.

    $40? Sold!

They're asking the same price for the Fusion pre-order as Parallels was briefly asking for upgrades for current users prior to availability. The amusing part is, now that you can try the latest Parallels version (you couldn't even try it while the $39 offer was in effect, unless you were in the limited private beta), if you own Parallels and want to upgrade it'll cost you fifty bucks.

Given that I am not even using my purchased copy of Parallels these days because of reliability issues (a great reason to want to try out an upgrade before forking over more cash), this Fusion offer sounds like a very good deal.

Fusion: - runs 64 bit OS's - has multi-CPU support - runs Vista boot-camp partitions - has actual support in their forums, with posts from VMWare employees helping users - is cheaper than upgrading my current buggy VM - comes from a company with a long history of enterprise-level stability and support

    Sold.
