VMware pre-orders for $40
VMware today announced that users can now pre-order VMware Fusion, which enables Mac users to simultaneously run Mac, Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris-based applications without rebooting. The company said that customers can pre-order VMware Fusion for $40 until the product is generally available--sometime by the end of August. It said that the full retail price will be $80. VMware Fusion Beta 4, which is available today, delivers seamless Windows Integration with Unity, which enables users to run Windows XP applications directly on their Mac desktops, providing full integration with Mac keyboard shortcuts and Mac OS X's Expose. In addition, the VMware Fusion Launch Palette provides access to all Windows applications, which can be saved to the Mac OS X Dock.
VMware Fusion also automatically detects users' existing Boot Camp installations to allow Mac OS X to run alongside Windows XP or Vista with no additional setup as well as offers accelerated 3-D graphics support -- allowing users to run DirectX 8.1 applications and play select DirectX 8.1 games from within Windows XP virtual machines.
Other features include Virtual SMP support; a snapshot/backup feature to capture and save the current state of a running virtual machine; a VMware converter ¸ migrate current Windows PC disks; and "Battery pass-through" to monitor the battery life of their Macs from within non-Mac virtual machines

Setup is a pain
Setup is a pain and the instructions for getting a virtual XP system up and running is non-existant. Parallels is way easier to use. I've tried both and I've gotten parallels to work with XP and Vista. VMware I can't even get windows to work as I don't see how you even start to set it up unlike parallels which takes you through an easy step by step setup and even asks what version of Windows you would like to install.
