MicroNet debuts 5TB eSATA RAID

5TB esATA RAID

MicroNet has begun shipping an eSATA RAID array system with Mac OS X compatibility that is capable of handling up to 5TB in attached drive storage. The new Platinum RAID Pro is powered by a 64-bit Intel XScale processor to accelerate I/O throughput, is system independent and requires no drivers to be installed. By default, the unit ships with RAID 5 -- distributed parity -- enabled, meaning that a single drive failure will not result in data loss.

To get around the normal 2TB capacity limit, MicroNet says it created "design innovations" in the eSATA host bus adapter and RAID controller

In addition to the 64-bit Intel processor, the Platinum RAID Pro features 128MB of error-correcting cache to eliminate lapses in data streaming. The five 3 Gbps SATA-2 drives can be configured for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 0+1 and JBOD operation. eSATA connectivity ensures

The Platinum RAID Pro is currently available with pricing starting at $2350 for a 2.5 terabyte array, $3000 for a 3.75 TB configuration and $4500 for the high-end 5TB model. Configurations are available in either a two-port PCI-E HBA or a four-port PCI-X adapter.
