Apple's iTunes 7.2 supports DRM-free music

updated 02:50 am EDT, Wed May 30, 2007

Apple releases iTunes 7.2

As expected, Apple today released iTunes 7.2 (Windows), an update to its popular music jukebox and video management software for both Mac and Windows. Available via the Mac OS X Software Update, the 29.2MB enables users to preview and purchase iTunes Plus music--new higher-quality, DRM-free music downloads from participating music labels--although the iTunes Store itself has not been updated with DRM-free music. The Cupertino-based company, which announced the deal with EMI in April, will allow users to upgrade their current music and Apple's help documentation notes that songs without DRM protection, called "iTunes Plus," have no usage restrictions and feature higher-quality encoding.

"The first time you buy an iTunes Plus song, you specify whether to make all future purchases iTunes Plus versions (when available). You can change this setting by accessing your account information on the iTunes Store," the company wrote. "If you already have iTunes Store purchases that are now available as iTunes Plus downloads, you may upgrade your existing purchases. To do so, visit the iTunes Store and follow the onscreen instructions."

    So

They leave out the most important part. How much does an iTunes Plus song cost? Clearly its going to be more than 99¢

Uhm, this has absolutely nothing to do with this article and is an obvious attempt to sell something. Try to be more subtle in your free advertising and maybe somebody like me will spend more than 3 seconds looking at yet another video converter...yawn.

    Winblowz?

Looks like it's time to change the MACnn name to winblowznn. Cupetino releases a new version of iTunes for the Mac and MACnn reports that it has upgraded the winblowz version, nice.

    Not MacNN

This article is on Electronista (MacNN's Engadget wannabe site), not on MacNN. So making the news cross-platform makes sense.

    quick on that trigger

Some people are very quick with their trigger finger (winblowzNN?) Much like the first post; if you visit itunes.com (a.k.a. apple.com/itunes/download), you'll see right there that iTunes Plus songs cost $1.29.

This effective shuts the mouths of all those in the E.U. claiming monopoly abuse. If you buy iTunes Plus songs, you can put them on your bleeping Zune if you wish! What is actually very nice about this is that I can now put these songs on my Sony-Ericsson Walkman phone. I will eventually dump it for an iPhone, but until then, this is great news.

My only hope is that these songs don't immediately begin appearing on LimeWire and such.

    re: quick on that trigger

They are already available on LimeWire etc. So what does it matter?
