Sony considers 80GB PS3 in US

Sony Considers 80GB US PS3

The new 80GB PlayStation 3 is being considered as an option for the US, according to Sony Computer Entertainment's Satoshi Fukuoka. While the larger-capacity game system was previously said to have been an exclusive for Korea, the Sony spokesman noted that the US and other areas could see added storage if the market demands it.

"Increasing capacity for models is one of the options," Fukuoka said today. "We make such decisions depending on the needs of the market, and every country is different."

Korea's larger drive option is said to have been spurred by the ubiquitous nature of broadband Internet in the country, which encourages more frequent downloads and online gaming sessions.

Sony has been reshuffling its storage options for the PS3 ever since its November launch, dropping 20GB models first for the larger worldwide launch in March and later as a North American option. Sony has not said whether it will lower the price of existing 60GB models with future upgrades or replace the older systems entirely.
