iPhone to be offered with prepaid service?

iPhone Prepaid Leak

The iPhone may be offered as a prepaid device, according to a leaked list of AT&T product codes. Entered into the cell provider's system on April 19th, the tracking numbers would have the Apple handset available through each of AT&T's main service methods, including familiar subscription-only service as well as the Go Phone Pick Your Plan (hybrid) and Pay As You Go (prepaid-only) methods. The costs for the individual services are unknown, though AT&T hasn't announced any changes to its payment methods for the iPhone versus other devices.

While the possibility remains that the entries for different payment methods have been completed automatically regardless of AT&T's intent to use them for shipping phones, the revelation suggests that AT&T has reconsidered its initial stance on the iPhone's use on its network. The company has so far only committed to the pricing officially announced at Macworld San Francisco in January, which asserted only that the iPhone would be available starting from $499 with a two-year full subscription.

The uncovered list didn't indicate what, if any, price changes would be made for the handset itself to accommodate different pricing systems. [via BGR]

    Geesh

(One of these days, I'm going to get this posted to the correct forum!)

While the possibility remains that the entries for different payment methods have been completed automatically regardless of AT&T's intent to use them for shipping phones, the revelation suggests that AT&T has reconsidered its initial stance on the iPhone's use on its network.

Gee, so one second you say it could have been done automatically, then do a complete u-turn and say it suggests that AT&T has reconsidered their stance? Its like saying "Hey, my new Mac came with an Apple 'proof of purchase' card that says it will get me mac OS updates. That means there's going to be update pricing for the next version of OS X!" Does anyone actually ever recall using one of these coupons? (BTW, someone on ebay is selling theirs from 10.1 for just $25! Make an offer today!)

And maybe it just means that someone down in the trenches was told to get them product codes for the iphone, and they did (like they do for all phones), and stuck them into the system. Do you really think the peons who enter this information into the system were placed in confidence with the president/CEO deliberations on how they're planning on offering up this device? h***, its been in the system for a month, for goodness sakes. I'd have a hard time believing the head honchos know even now what they want to do with this thing.

And this may sound silly, but could we just possibly wait the month or two for the iphone to be released to find out about pricing/availability, rather then just keep speculating based on the fact there's a product code in an internal database?

Amen, sadly the answer is "no."

    Makes Sense

ATT wants to win people over to its network, as such, it doesn't make sense that it would limit the available plans. If anything, it will introduce even better options. Moreover, it knows the iPhone will only work on its network. If you do pay as you go, and pay $500 bucks for the phone, when the card is used up, you have to go back to ATT. ATT makes money no matter what you do, and so does Apple.

For what it is worth, ATT's pay as you go stinks. The minute charges are higher then T-Mobiles, and it charges you a daily connect fee for days you use the phone.
