Microsoft unveils Expression Media

Microsoft has unveiled Expression Media, a new professional asset management tool that works on Mac OS X systems to visually catalog and organize digital assets for retrieval and presentation. Users can drag-and-drop to import more than 100 different media formats, including digital RAW files. Expression Media features batch processing to rename, convert, or tag hundreds of files at a time while offering search functionality to find and retrieve digital media assets.Users can edit images and track changes with version control, and folder watching keeps catalogs up to date. Microsoft Expression Media is priced at $300, but is available for pre-order from Amazon.com for $280. The software requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Why would anyone look to Microsoft for such a product? Perhaps a better question... where did they get it? ;)

iView MediaPro, RIP

This used to be iView MediaPro. A decent product that was Mac-only for many years. Then they shipped a Windows version. Then Microsoft bought it. In a year or two they will kill it.

another MS outreach

Yet another MS outreach to expand into another market they know nothing about, and will likely screw up. I used to love using iView, until my needs shrunk to fit w/in the iPhoto and other such products-world. But w/ MS being involved, it is likely a goner.

but really, what other Asset Management systems do you know of? Canto Cumulous? Extensis? I'm downloading this right now and am going to put it through it paces.

I love iView Pro but haven't upgraded since Microsoft took it over.

Extensis Portfolio and cato Cumulus both are awkward to run and muddled in their interfaces.

My ideal is a catalog program that just gets on with it and lets me create quick, easy and neat pdf catalog sheets for compatibility. iView is the closest I have come to that.

If only Preview/iPhoto let you save slideshows or graphics collections as multipage pdfs or proofsheets. iPhoto suffers from its lack of support for pdfs and eps files.

btw Does anyone know how to get catalogs to resdie on CD/DVDs and point at the content on the media itself?

iView Media Pro is fantastic! I've been using it for years for lots of things... cataloging digital pix, doing slideshows, keeping track of graphics files, sending photos as small email attachments...

It's a shame that MS got their greedy, ignorant mitts on it. I'll wait a while before "upgrading" or taking the time to hunt down something to replace it. The thought of having to rebuild hundreds of Catalogue files makes me ILL.

You can print a multipage PDF from an iPhoto roll or album. From print, choose the settings you want and then click on the pulldown for PDF (bottom left corner) and choose "Save as PDF..."

according to the iView website, users of Media Pro 3 will get a free upgrade to this new version! Just because Microsoft took it over doesn't mean it sucks. Apple has made some pretty cr*ppy software as well. Just look at Appleworks 6.X!!!
