Sony-Ericsson Bluetooth headset juggles calls, music

updated 03:55 pm EDT, Tue May 8, 2007

Sony-Ericsson DS980

Rounding out Sony-Ericsson's updates today is the DS980, its new Bluetooth headset for those who often balance calls and music. The update to the accessory streams music in full stereo thanks to A2DP support and the extra bandwidth of Bluetooth 2.0. In-canal earbuds are also used with silicone tips to block outside audio, while the main body itself will automatically filter sounds during calls to clean the outgoing voice. Multiple devices are supported at once for notebooks and media players that can recognize the new earpiece.

The DS980 also borrows from the Z750 and Sony's newer Walkman players with a hidden OLED that only becomes visible for caller ID or track info and saves battery life in the process. Sony-Ericsson estimates roughly 6 hours of continuous music or talk time.

Although tailored to the company's own phones, the new headset pairs with most any modern phone and should go on sale internationally as of the summer.
