Akimbo quits hardware, ponders Apple TV

Akimbo Quits Hardware

Akimbo is quitting the hardware business, the company announced today. The video provider said it will axe its RCA video player to focus instead on its new Internet TV initiative as well as getting the company's basic technology into other devices, hoping to make Akimbo synonymous with Internet TV.

"We simply want to be in everyone's box," said CEO Thomas Frank.

The move also opens a door to placing Akimbo streaming on the Apple TV media hub, which currently shares the ability to stream the user's own files but is currently limited in direct Internet access to movie trailers and basic top 10 lists of shows. Frank wouldn't commit to specific deals with Apple but said it would be an option alongside router manufacturers and other logical extensions of Akimbo's software.

"I could see [Apple] as a partner, but meanwhile there are other boxes," he said.

Those who currently use the now discontinued RCA player will have three months of free service through the device as part of the changeover, according to the company. Newer customers will also have the option of refunds for the devices and credit for the transformed service. Official partners for the change haven't been discussed. [via NewTeeVee]

    Questionable.

"We simply want to be in everyone's box" is one of the more questionable sound bites I've heard in recent times.
