Third NYC Apple Store may be largest yet

Following last week's announcement of a third New York City retail store, more details have begun to emerge. The company will open its newest Big Apple retail store in the Meatpacking District at 401 W. 14th St., according to the New York Post. Apple is reportedly leasing more than 32,000 feet on the cellar, ground and second floor of the 60,000-square-foot, low-rise structure on the northwest corner of 14th Street and Ninth Avenue, the report noted. Last year, reports indicated that the third Apple retail store may emerge on West 34th street, where the company had secured a lease, but the fate of that location remains unknown (plans for other locations in Manhattan have also faltered).

"The former home to a Western Beef grocery store and Belgian restaurant Markt, the building where the new store will open is being completely renovated and getting a new 9,000-square-foot penthouse along with 2,500 feet of terraces overlooking the triangular intersection of Ninth Avenue, Hudson Street and 14th Street," the Post wrote.

High-end retailers Stella McCartney, Jeffrey and Alexander McQueen are among Apple's neighboring retailers, the article added.

The facility is even larger than Apple's 25,000 square foot midtown Manhattan retail store--the only Apple retail store to be open 24 hours a day--which is in the underground retail plaza of the General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Street. It features a gigantic 32-foot glass cube as well as patented staircase. Apple recently remodeled and expanded Regent Store location in the UK is its largest retail store at just over 28,000 square feet.

The report also indicates that the planned retail store is also larger than Apple's first Manhattan location: the 22,000 square foot Apple Store SoHo on Prince Street.

The location in the Meatpacking district still has retail vacancies, according to the report.

"Still left to rent is 7,000 square feet on the ground level, which has an asking rent of $400 a square foot, 1,500 in the cellar, 10,500 feet on the third floor, and the penthouse space, which has potential as either a showroom or restaurant," the publication wrote.

The West Chelsea "Meatpacking District" location of the upcoming retail store is just a few blocks from Google’s massive NYC office.

A few blocks away from google's office in manhattan? Try about 1.5 blocks. Also, a bit further away, and far more interesting is the disused remains of the elevated freight railway which extends uninterrupted from nearby west 17th and 10th ave all the way to west 34th street west of penn station. There are parts that go farther south and terminate closer to the proposed store, but it is blocked off as the structure enters the sides of buildings where it once passed through.
