Apple battery issues, fix

Apple in an official statement today admitted that some batteries used in its MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks may have performance issues. The Cupertino-based company was quick to point out that these issues do not present any kind of safety risk, and immediately provided a software update to improve battery performance for all MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks purchased between February 2006 and April 2007. Apple recommends all customers who purchased MacBooks, MacBook Pros, or extra batteries between those dates run the update, and has promised to replace any battery sold between the above dates that still displays specific symptoms after the software update is properly installed.

Symptoms of affected batteries may include non-recognition of the battery, causing an "X" to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar; failed attempts to charge the battery when the computer is plugged into AC power; exhibition of a low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count of less than 300; and/or visibly deformed battery packs.

The company said customers who, after installing the battery update, experience any of the listed symptoms can make a reservation to bring the computer with its battery to a local Apple Retail Store or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple will then determine whether the battery is eligible for replacement and, if so, will replace the battery free of charge -- even if the MacBook or MacBook Pro is already out of warranty.

Apple also noted that the program extends repair coverage on the battery for up to two years from the date of purchase of the computer for MacBook and MacBook Pro systems with Intel Core Duo processors.

I took my Macbook (not Pro) in with the same exact battery problem 2 months ago - X appeared over icon, battery not recognized, machine would not charge it (only ran off AC). There were no less than 2 other people at the Genius bar with similarly affected Macbooks, FYI.

My Company purchased 3 Macbook Pros last May. One had the battery 'X' issue, one battery would not charge and the other two months ago started showing only 15% capacity. Apple promptly replaced all the batteries, no questions asked when the problem occurred. Lets hope the patch makes these problems go away.

I do not get it, the fix applies to both the MacBook and MacBook Pros.

I just went though Apple Support last week on this subject and after 30mins of being on the phone it was "well, its a battery and over time it doesn't hold its charge as well."

Guess I'll try the software and go from there. sigh.
