New multifunction printers from Lexmark

Printing giant Lexmark has introduced five new five new color laser printers aimed at businesses of varying sizes. The most powerful is the X945e, which is aimed at workgroups, and is capable of a dramatic 40 pages per minute (ppm) in color mode and 45 in monochrome. The X940e is a step down at 30ppm color and 40ppm monochrome, while the X782e (pictured) is slightly faster at 35 and 40ppm, but does not offer things such as the A3 ledger size, or finishing options such as folding. Lowest to highest, prices for the above three printers are $4,500, $16,000 and $19,000.

The remaining two printers are aimed not at workgroups but small businesses and heavy desktop use. The X500n and X502n are able to scan, copy and print like their larger brethren, but at much slower speeds, with a print output of 8ppm in color and 31ppm in monochrome. They are however said to be twice as fast as their closest competition, due in part to 35-sheet document feeders. The 502n is essentially identical to the 500n; the only difference is that the 502 adds fax capabilities. Its price is $700, while the 500 is selling for $500.

Not twice as fast

They state that their X502n is twice as fast as their closest competitor. I don't think so. The Epson CX11NF is 25ppm monochrome and 5ppm color which while is not as fast is certainly not 1/2 the speed of the Lexmark. Combine this with the facts that the Epson is $150 cheaper includes COLOR faxing and the Epson ADF is 50 sheet compared to 35 sheet for the Lexmark! Also, the Epson model is 2 years old. What took Lexmark so long for something that overall is not really any better!

personally i recommend staying away from lexmark. their mac drivers are crap. they also dont support their printers past one to two OS versions. for example i have an X73 that is simply unusable on newer OS versions because the monitor tool runs away with the cpu for some reason and also causes wacky problems with disk mounting(why? but it does) i also had another lexmark aio printer that i used for my windows machine that is only about two years old. no mac drivers at all. this is not to say this printer in this article isnt good, im just saying buyer beware because when 10.5 or 10.6 comes out you might have to buy a new printer.
