PS3 update brings rumble back, direct PS1 gameplay

PS3 1.70 Update

Sony on Thursday continued its upgrades to the PlayStation 3 with the 1.70 update. Key to the patch is the return of explicit rumble support for legacy games; courtesy of the recent settlement with force-feedback developer Immersion, owners with some legacy controllers can get vibration back in PS1 and PS2 games that supported the feature. The PS3 can now also play those PS1 games when downloaded directly from the online PlayStation Store rather than saving them for a PSP, Sony says, and can transfer save games from the portable to the larger system.

The update is available now and mixes with a similar 3.4 PSP update that helps ensure compatibility as well as increase performance for PS1 games downloaded from Sony's online store.
