Microsoft, Samsung swap patents for future tech

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Thu April 19, 2007

Microsoft and Samsung

Microsoft and Samsung have arranged a patent deal that could greatly influence the designs of each other's hardware and software, the two companies announced today. In the exchange, Samsung would gain the right to use Microsoft patents for many of its electronics, including computers, media players, and TVs. Microsoft in turn would receive similar access to computer and digital media technology, the announcement said.

Although the exact products that could stem from the agreement weren't discussed, the agreement may allow Samsung to use Windows, Xbox, and Zune-like features in later devices while Microsoft itself could enhance its own hardware using techniques in devices like the K3 flash player.

Financial details were kept secret in the deal, but the two companies explained that they would each be compensated for use of each other's technologies. The agreement should take effect today.
