Sonnet debuts SATA RAID storage systems

Sonnet today debuted its desktop Fusion D400Q and 1U rackmount Fusion R400Q SATA storage systems at NAB 2007, as well as its Fusion D500P desktop SATA storage system. Sonnet today also unveiled its Fusion D800RAID 8-drive and Fusion D400RAID 4-drive SATA disk array storage systems. The company's Fusion D400Q and 1U rackmount Fusion R400Q SATA storage systems feature four swappable hard drive modules that provide a total of 2-3TB of storage and connect to virtually any computer via eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400, or USB 2.0. The Fusion D500P desktop SATA storage system includes a port multiplier alongside five swappable hard drive modules for a total of 2.5-3.75TB of storage. Sonnet's Fusion D800RAID 8-drive and Fusion D400RAID 4-drive SATA disk array storage systems each feature a PCI Express RAID host adapter with support for RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 10, 50, and JBOD configurations in a quiet enclosure.

Fusion systems are compatible with Apple's Final Cut Pro and Adobe's Premiere Pro CS3 video editing software, as well as video capture cards from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Matrox, and Bluefish444. The Fusion storage systems feature Enterprise/RAID Edition hard drives which are subjected to hours of additional testing to check for soft errors, vibration, and other reliability prediction factors. The drives are prepared with special RAID-optimized firmware, and the drives are swappable across Sonnet's entire Fusion line.

Fusion system enclosures also integrate a quiet, swappable fan module. The fan is 80 percent quieter than a standard case fan, according to Sonnet, making the enclosures suited for use in noise-sensitive environments.

Fusion D400Q, R400Q

Sonnet's Fusion D400Q and Fusion R400Q systems connect via a single FireWire 800, FireWire 400, or USB cable to provide all four drives with full speed access. The systems support RAID 0, 1, 10, and JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) configurations, and operate at full speed when connected to a Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P PCIe or X4P PCI-X adapter. A single Fusion 400Q device achieves 200MB/sec as a RAID 0 striped set, and up to four Fusion 400Qs can work in tandem on a Tempo SATA E4P or X4P to double, triple, or quadruple performance.

The Fusion R400Q system is designed for building portable audio/video editing systems. Measuring 13.5-inches deep, the 1U rackmount Fusion R400Q enclosure fits into shallow portable racks, such as the Gator rack. The Fusion D400Q and R400Q are individually priced at $2,300 (2TB) or $3,400 (3TB).

Fusion D500P

The Fusion D500P desktop SATA storage system features a port multiplier and offers full speed access when connected to a Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P PCIe or X4P PCI-X adapter. Through its single eSATA connection the device achieves 225MB/sec as a RAID 0 striped set, or up to four Fusion D500Ps can work in tandem on via a Tempo SATA E4P or X4P to achieve double, triple, or quadruple the available streams.

The Fusion D500P is priced at $2,500 (2.5TB) or $3,700 (3.7TB).

Fusion D400RAID, D800RAID

Sonnet's Fusion D800RAID 8-drive and Fusion D400RAID 4-drive SATA disk array storage systems are designed for use in film and video editing. The systems each support RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 10, 50, and JBOD configurations in a quiet enclosure that contains hot-swappable drive modules with Enterprise/RAID edition SATA drives and locking cables.

A Fusion D800RAID system configured as a RAID 4 (seven drives striped plus one parity drive) can achieve 340MB/sec (AJA Kona 1080HD test). The same system configured as RAID 0 handles one stream of 2K (2048x1556) video. A similarly configured D400RAID (RAID 4) achieves 160MB/sec, and users can replace drives in 2-3 hours of downtime, or operation can continue at reduced bandwidth while the RAID rebuilds in the background.

The Sonnet PCI Express RAID host adapter, based on the latest-generation Intel 348 RAID processor and complemented by 256MB of onboard ECC-protected RAM, is powered by ATTO RAID technology. The RAID 4 implementation includes the ATTO Advanced Data Streaming (ADSTM) Technology, a feature that maximizes the number of concurrent video streams while protecting content in case of a drive's failure. The included software utilities provide user-extensive control of the Fusion RAID system's configuration. Connections between host and enclosure are simplified through the use of one or two reliable four-lane cables.

Fusion D800RAID systems are priced at $5,000 (4TB) or $7,000 (6TB), while Fusion D400RAID systems will ship for $3,400 (2TB) or $5,000 (3TB).
