'The Fin' doubles as handle, laptop stand

updated 01:25 pm EDT, Thu April 12, 2007

'The Fin' laptop stand

A company called Fins-Up has released The Fin, an add-on for Apple laptops that functions as a permanent stand. The product is made of single piece of aircraft-grade aluminum, and raises a laptop just far enough off a desk to create a more comfortable typing angle, simultaneously reducing system heat by allowing air to circulate underneath. The durability of the Fin means it can double as a handle, making it easier to carry a laptop around a home or office. Four models of the Fin are available: the MacBook Pro and PowerBook G4 versions retain a natural aluminum color, while the MacBook versions are powder-coated black or white. Each stand costs $30 and must be user-installed with the included screwdriver.

    uh

$30 + s/h for a hunk of metal to make your laptop bulkier. They should include "No moving parts!" in their marketing material to emphasize how lame this is.

A DIY alternative would be to gorilla glue a piece of 2x4 lumber to your computer instead.

    Loving the Fin

Not sure what malax's issue is, but the product is great! My MBP is prop'd up now at a perfect angle and easier to carry. Maybe not for all, but for me and my family it was well worth the $30.

    A better widget

Finally an alternative to other flimsy stands/handles for Mac Laptops. I will try one!

    Very cool....

I bought my fin after looking at what else was out there. They were all handles which fold flat but they have one flaw. They become loose. This design is simplicity and no maintenance other than checking the screws. I think Malax is having a male period as I viewed his other posts. Go have a drink and loosen up! This is a great alternative to other designs and that is what it is all about. If you can think of something better then go make your millions. Peace Out!

    I call BS

I suspect the glowing reviews are by shills. Look at the picture at the top of this article (and on the product site). Does that look like a comfortable or safe way to carry a laptop? It looks like a white-knuckle death grip. I'll stick to the under-the-arm carry myself--inside a sleeve, which this thing would seem to disallow. The only thing mildly interesting about this is thinking about how they managed to find a way to s**** it on securely. Well the other interesting thing is wondering what their "patent pending" application looks like. How to you turn "s**** a hunk of metal on the back of a laptop" into intellectual property legalese? My money's on the patent not being granted BTW.
