Kansas City schools mull 6,000 Mac purchase
Each student in a Kansas City high school may soon receive a Mac laptop supplied by the city's education board, according to the Kansas City Star. In a plan laid out by school administrators, the board would lease 6,000 Macs, which would be assigned to students annually. To guarantee maximum use of the computers however, the board would also invest in support costs, including upgrades to wireless Internet access. The tentative scheme -- which has not been approved -- would cost $2 million annually, and begin in November of this year, targeting grades nine through 12. The board is also considering charging students a $50 insurance premium plus any necessary repair costs. Nothing will be decided until at least May 8th.
