Briefly: Subsidized Zunes; Lego Star Wars

updated 06:10 pm EDT, Wed April 4, 2007

'Free' Zunes; Star Wars

In brief: Microsoft may offer free Zunes with a subscription, Lego Star Wars goes Universal, and Epson develops a new head for inkjet printers. The lead of the Zune marketing division at Microsoft, Jason Reindorp, hints that some future versions of the player may be sold at a discount, or possibly even for free. The key to this is the Zune Pass option at the Zune Marketplace, which unlike the iTunes Store, offers an unlimited music subscription. Much as cellular networks discount the price of a phone with a long-term contract, Zune buyers may be able to sign up for a particular subscription plan and receive a player at a lower cost. At the earliest, such a strategy is most likely to be announced towards the end of 2007.

New Lego Star Wars patch

Aspyr has released the 1.0 Rev A patch for Lego Star Wars, the Traveller's Tales take on the prequel Star Wars trilogy. Players participate in a more comical version of the story, with gameplay elements themed around collecting and constructing Lego. The Rev A patch makes the game a Universal Binary, which should improve performance on Intel Macs.

New inkjet head developed by Epson

Epson says it has developed a new type of head for inkjet printers. It uses a thin-film piezo element, which the company claims provides the "world's highest" amount of distortion. In theory this should increase the cost effectiveness of future printers, the first of the lot being scheduled for later this month. The main focus will be on commercial and industrial uses.

all over again. They can't sell 'em so they'll give them away in hopes to carve out a larger niche. No other company could possible afford such a business model but without it they wouldn't be where they are.

Ok, testudo, I know you're lurking, come on boy, do your thing...

    What a Joke

You want to know what really sad? Microsoft could start giving Zune players away with a Zune Pass subscription, and they still wouldn't even come even remotely close to the sales figures of the iPod. Maybe once MS has pissed away a billion dollars or so they'll finally give up on this failed bit.

    This might work

Microsoft may be on to something with the Zune for free. Now many would not pay $299 for one, but getting if for free with a subscription could really work. Think of how many crappy phones have been sold like this. What's more worrisome is the "social" may be come a selling point. Now it's hard to fine a Zume to "share" with, but get a more out their and it doesn't look so lame.

    re: this might work

I have to agree: sadly, this idea has legs. IMO it may likely force Apple to make some sort of change to their current scheme, be it hardware improvements, lower price points, or a reworking of the media sales model. Only time will tell, but The Fruit as a whole is no dummy ... they'll think of something compelling to counter this move by MS.

    It's a good thing..

We need a competition. If we didn't have a bunch of other crappy players out there we wouldn't be paying too much attention to the iPod as the best player.

Have you guys seen Zune in person? Besides that it has a larger screen, it is an ugly-looking device with a visual simulation of the iPod click wheel that doesn't work the same way. I wouldn't want it any day..

    Marketing

This is a good marketing move by M$. With the Zune M$ knew that they'd have to take a hit on profits, probably take a loss, to build up a user base large enough to represent a viable competitor to M$; this is more of the same. I can't know if it will work, but given the task, it's a good move on M$ part. Of coarse Apple can adjust it's own strategy to counter this as long as they are paying attentions, and I believe Apple has been paying attentions since SJ's return.

    150 months subscription

subscription is $15 per month i think $10 for the music company's, MS gets $5 - $3 working cost = $2 profit per month. A Zune costs $300 so MS needs 150 months subscription service to brake even.

fkn bstrds just want to take on Apple with there money instead of a good product.

    Subscriptions don't work!

Subscriptions don't work! The Zune is a total failure at being an mp3 player and its wireless feature is useless and pointless. The DRM built in to the Zune is the worst ever by any company and only makes the user experience worse than ever. Do yourself a favor and just spend the money and get an iPod whether you're a Mac user or PC user you will enjoy the experience and not be hindered by Microsofts DRM in there music and player.

    music

Most people are not interested in discovering new music. Most people probably have a few hundred songs they really like, listen to alot, and occasionally add to.
