Briefly: San Louis Apple Store? OS X 10.4.9

In brief: An opening date has reportedly been set for an Apple Store in downtown San Luis Obispo, Apple has admitted to serious problems with Final Cut and Mac OS X 10.4.9, and three major corporations are banding together to take on YouTube as well as other video sharing sites. Hammer Storage today unveiled the myshare network storage device that offers up to 2TB of network storage, researchers suspect notebooks will begin outselling desktops by 2011, and Skype has discovered a court ruling that could force cellular phone manufacturers as well as carriers to open up their devices to VOIP (Voice Over IP). A sign in the front of the retail space at 899 Higuera St. in downtown San Luis Obispo suggests that Apple has scheduled to open its latest retail store on June 9th, although the Cupertino-based company itself refused to acknowledge a future store in that location.

Final Cut troubles in Mac OS X 10.4.9

One MacNN reader has received a reply from Apple tech support confirming his suspicions that Mac OS X 10.4.9 users are experiencing serious issues when trying to run Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0.

"Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Final Cut Express 3.0 may drop frames when attempting to capture video if Mac OS X 10.4.9 is installed," Apple wrote in its response. "Final Cut Pro 5 and Final Cut Express 3.5 are not affected by this issue."

The company is recommending against running Final Cut Pro 4.5 or Final Cut Express 3.0 in Mac OS X 10.4.9, suggesting instead to archive and install Mac OS X to revert to the previous operating system version -- Mac OS X 10.4.8.

NBC, Universal, News Corp. take on YouTube

NBC, Universal, and News Corp. have announced a new video site that will debut this summer to take on the likes of YouTube and other video sharing sites. The new effort, which is still without a name, will offer clips as well as full episodes of shows such as "Heroes," "House," and "30 Rock" alongside movies such as "Borat," "Little Miss Sunshine," and "The Devil Wears Prada."

2TB network storage, laptop sales, mobile VOIP?

Hammer Storage today offered up its myshare network storage device -- an enclosure that accommodates a pair of hard drives and that serves as a central hub for up to 2TB of files.... Laptops will outsell desktop systems by 2011 if trends continue as they have, according to research firm IDC; The desktop market is expected to rise 3.8 percent year-over-year with a nearby boost from Windows Vista, while laptop estimations predict 16.1 percent growth per year.... Skype has reportedly discovered a fairly unused ruling that could force cellular phone manufacturers and carriers to open up devices to VOIP as well as other software; a petition made by the software developer to the FCC points to a 1968 ruling that allowed a radio device called the Carterfone to link a two-way radio to the phone network, setting a precedent that ultimately allowed dial-up internet access alongside fax machines to be used on phone networks regardless of the exact owner.
