Apple TV dissection shows Intel CPU

Apple TV dissected

TechRestore has dissected the new Apple TV set top box device, revealing the insides of the company's wireless media streaming device via numerous photographs. the photos show the hard drive stuck to the top cover, connected via a thin ribbon cable to the mainboard alongside what appears to be the power supply. All of the Apple TV's ports are neatly aligned and attached cleanly to the mainboard behind a heatsink, the wireless card, and the power supply. The GPU on the dissected model is clearly manufactured by NVIDIA, while the CPU is an Intel chip. [images courtesy of TechRestore]

    GPU

So this has a GPU and the Mac MINI doesn't :)

I think Apple need to up the spec of the Mac MINI.

    Drive is on Bottom

It appears that the drive is mounted to the bottom not the top.

By looking at the pictures--the rubber cover pulled back from the bottom-See the photo with the red component jack next to the optical audio. The unit is upside down...you see the same orientation for the shot of the bottom cover lifted to show the hard drive.

    hd on bottom

good catch, I thought it was kinda weird to have the drive mounted to the top, as well.

    Wow!

I really thought it would have a PowerPC processor in it, too!

It's definitely turned upside down. HD is on bottom.

    @testudo

I thought it was confirmed a month-or-so ago that Intel would be making the main processor?

    Actually...

I read that it was going to use old recycled penti-yum 4 CPUs, the ones that you can buy 20 for a buck.

    Thermal Compound

Apple needs to learn "when to say when" with the thermal compound. That's a very liberal application of thermal paste on that nVidia chip.

    nVidia GPU

Oh, boy, this makes the Core Duo mini look even worse. I'm half-tempted to go out and buy an AppleTV and upgrade it to run a complete copy of OS X.

I'll take a Core Solo or lower in exchange for a GPU that actually supports 3d.
