Apple's Mac OS X 10.4.9

[digg this] Apple today posted Mac OS X 10.4.9, a massive update to its current-generation operating system that fixes more than 20 security bugs and offers other enhancements, including RAW camera support, handling of large or malformed images that could cause crashes, improved image capture performance, mouse scrolling and keyboard shortcuts, font handling, playback quality, and bookmarks in DVD Player, USB video conferencing cameras for use with iChat, Bluetooth devices, browsing AFP servers, Apple USB Modem, Windows-created digital certificates, Open and Print dialogs in applications that use Rosetta on Intel-based Macs, Time zone and daylight saving for 2006 and 2007, and other security updates. Apple has a full list of details here. In addition, the company has posted a Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther (Server version) users. The update is available for PowerPC- and Intel-based Clients and both PowerPC- and Intel-based Servers or as a Combo update (PowerPC or Intel). Apple's iPhoto 6.06 also addresses issues associated with EXIF data compatibility and Photocasting.

Apple said that iPhoto 6.06 update also fixes an issue where subscribing to a maliciously-crafted photocast may lead to arbitrary code execution, which was described on the Month of Apple Bugs website (MOAB-04-01-2007). The update, Apple said, addresses the issue by performing additional validation while handling photocast subscriptions.

    Oh goodie!

Let the weeping and gnashing of teeth begin. Who will be the first to declare this update a disaster? But someone declares EVERY update to be a disaster eventually, don't they?

    goodie or not

I shall be the first to declare this update a veritable disaster! (even though I haven't downloaded it yet) ;-) the lurkers demand we decry apple updates on the MacNN forum pages!! in fact they demand this site be renamed WinNN, even though that is rather difficult to pronounce!

    oh so snappy!

no, we declare it snappier™! and it sure is snappy™!

ok, so I don't notice any difference compared to 10.4.8, but hey... :)

    Dammit!

I wanted to be the one to declare it a disaster! Just reading that it was available here on MacNN cause my new MBP to catch fire. My SE/30 still cannot boot this so-called OS. On top of that, I cannot connect to the internet while the machine is sleeping or turned off. Simply ridiculous!

Finally, believe it or not, Apple has again failed to deliver all of the new features in Leopard in their 10.4.x update. WTF is that all about??? Are they actually expecting people to buy leopard when in comes out or something???

Katrina was a vacation compared to this OS release, that's how big of a disaster this thing is!

    not so zippy

Updating to 10.4.9 didn't feel any zippier than updating to 10.4.8. It is comparable in general zippiness to updating from 10.2.4 to 10.2.5, but not quite as zippy as, say, 10.3.1 to 10.3.2.

I think Apple is losing it.

    Wow....

Typing is waaaaay faster (ooooops. Seeeee). Safari is faster, as is booting. The screen is much clearer -- I think this update is somehow making my co-workers' fingerprint smudges disappear.

    error

Don't know what the heck happened....towards the end of download, was told there was an error, the downloaded files were sent to the trash can and would be deleted. So I hit restart as the message told me to, and everything cleared except my desktop background...so forced shut down, then went to startup again and all it does is goto the gray screen with the apple and spins...so now I'm stuck in windows :(:(...anyone have any tips?
