Cover Flow on iPod?

A new video has surfaced depicting Apple's Cover Flow technology on an iPod, suggesting that the Cupertino-based company is heading away from text-based menus. Cover Flow is utilized in Apple's iPhone to visually browse musical albums with 3D representations of the cover art 'flipping' from side to side as users scroll through their complete albums. The anonymous video contributor also said that there will be no truly new iPods prior to the iPhone's release, according to Gizmodo, enabling the cellular handset to take center stage when it begins shipping in June. The video appears to show a user with a video-capable iPod flipping back and forth through various musical albums using the clickwheel, revealing the standard user interface when a song is selected for playback.

    I would imagine that

any new iPod would have the same features as the music/video section of the iPhone. I would hope that the devices would look virtually identical with a widescreen and the touch screen technology. I can't imagine that they would leave the same size screen and functionality as the present iPod when everyone knows what Apple has under its belt.

    Faking?

I don't have a video iPod (just a meager first-generation nano), but can you use the click-wheel to "scrub" the video (i.e., fast forward/rewind)? If so, he wouldn't even have to rehearse the movements.

    not fake

It's not a fake. There are reflections of background light on the screen and over the film. If they had just copied recorded iTunes coverflow onto the iPod movie, the reflection would have been covered as well.

    bogus

Who cares if the video's bogus (which it is, because its not like Apple sends out ipod updates to select partners for beta testing or anything). The argument that there will be no new ipods before June is a stupid one. The only thing it would keep apple from doing is releasing a wide-screen ipod. Making a 6g with some new features in March would not take away from the iphone's supposed release date in June (if not later).

not to beat a dead horse but yes, fake. Uhhh, just cuz there's reflections doesn't mean anything. Here's how he did it: 1. Use coverflow in itunes, record with snapzpro 2. covert to ipod compatible video 3. load on ipod, reherse movements, turn on camera. 4. pretend you're scrolling through albums, albeit poorly. 5. then pretend you're clicking on an album (ie chili peppers). 6. Cut your video at that moment (look closely, yes it jumps) to the ipod directory of that album. 7. Post on youtube, crawl back in your box. 8. WOW - NEW IPOD WITH COVERFLOW!!

    Re: not fake

Uhm... I think you missed the point. It is fake. He took the video of coverflow and loaded it on the iPod and used the iPod to play it back. He didn't paste it over the video of the iPod.

    Probably fake, but…

Yeah, it's most likely a fake, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume Apple will make cover flow part of the next generation of video iPods. It makes sense to go that route as at least one of the ways to sort through your music. Though I hope not the default way. I still think the old fashioned way is better.
