iPhone ad during Oscars
Apple today aired its new iPhone television ad during the Oscars on Sunday night. The ad, played twice during the awards ceremony, featured clips--from popular movies--of famous actors answering the phone and saying "hello".

Can't believe Apple didn't put the name of the product in the ad. Everyone's going to think this product is called "Hello." Absolutely ridiculous. Who approves this stuff at Apple?

Apple Screwed Up?

How did Apple s**** up? I seriously doubt anyone thought it was a commercial for a Motorola phone. In fact it doesn't really matter what the name of the phone is since it is obvious the phone is an Apple product. Whether or not people think the name of the phone is a "hello" is irrelevant as long as they know it's from Apple. Additionally, are you aware of your Apple history? Early Macs ads said "Hello" (I believe they were ads) and then when the iMac was introduced in 1998, the commercial that ushered in the product used the slogan "Hello, Again."
In case you didn't notice, the Apple name never appeared either. Only a picture of the phone followed by the Apple logo which came a few frames later.

So, the commercial I saw (was there more than one) showed a bunch of movie stars using a bunch of phones, none of which was the iPhone. You could argue the point was to get the iPhone name out there, but as was mentioned, they didn't name it.
And, in classic Apple fashion, it also showed or explained nary a feature or concept. Wow. Its a phone (we guess, since it wasn't even mentioned that it was a phone - you need to either know previously what it was, which is a waste of advertising money, or infer its a phone, since they didn't even show the phone pad on it, just some silly picture).
So far, all anyone knows is Apple's got a phone. And if someone today says "Hey, I gots to get me one of those, how much does it cost?" and finds out it $500, they'll say "No thanks" before they find out what it can and can't do.
On the other hand its your standard apple commercial. All flash, no info.
Just imagine if they hired M$'s ad people, you know, the ones who actually show you the benefits of such a device in 30 seconds or a minute, in a well-done and understandable manner.
Ah, but it wouldn't win awards or anything.

MSs ad people?

You mean the ones who showed people flying through the mountains? Yeah, I learned a lot about XP from those.
This wasn't an ad for the iPhone, it was a teaser to get the millions of people who don't dote on Apple's every move buzzing about a new product they may have seen mentioned in the paper.
The fact that you don't like it is meaningless, you are talking about it and that's the point. I suspect the ad was very successful in it's purpose.

What a pity Steve Jobs and the Apple management didn't check first with all you guys prior to releasing the Apple iPhone ad! It's amazing that Apple has any success at all without your input and approval!! Amazing.

Didn't you have to type "HELLO" on an Apple II in order for it to boot?

I agree. I really, really, really wish Steve would consult with all the experts on this site before developing any new products. Then Apple wouldn't have so much trouble with crappy products like the iPod.
