DEFCON comes to the Mac

Ambrosia Software has announced that it will bring DEFCON Introversion game to the Mac. The title, which was released late last year on the PC platform, enables players to assume control of a continent and fight a nuclear war with one to five opponents. DEFCON is technically impossible to "win" in the standard sense, instead challenging players to come out with fewer "megadeaths." The game also boasts a unique visual style, loosely based on the computer displays from the 1983 movie "WarGames." Enemies are either human- or computer-controlled, and different game modes are available to accommodate various types of gamers. One such mode is a slower-paced office match, while another ensures that all the players start in an alliance. The Mac port will ship in March for $25.

    $25?? Ouch!

Cool game, I just bought it for my Win box on Friday. Woulda made do with the demo on Windows if I knew this was coming so soon.

OTOH, the Windows version only cost $18. I wonder if the serial numbers will be cross-platform?

Defcon from Ambrosia was announced last November. Nice to see a release date.

    if u wanna play now...

if you own an intel mac and wanna play now, but don't want to pay for windows or reboot into boot camp, download "wine" (http://www.winehq.com/), install steam from valve and download it from them. There's a free demo that I've been playing for over a month now. Runs like buttah on my core 2 duo mb pro :)

    In regards to wine

I found (though, this was afew months ago) that although I could host games I couldn't join them. Oh, and it runs much smoother natively (well, maybe apart from the whiteboard).

Oh, and although we've know it was coming for months (in fact, you could have been certain from the time IV announced it was being made at all), it is only now "official". The wonders of PR.

Finally, I must say that this is a great game. Almost as simple as chess, but, also like chess, incredibly deep. Though, it can make your head hurt when you come up against very good players.

    wine?

    Hey ccrider,

How did you get around the OGL D3D bugs with Wine and Mac OS X? I'm not saying that you didn't do it, I was just wondering how because I'm interested in doing the same...
