Myst Online: Uru Live

GameTap today announced that Myst Online: Uru Live will officially open its doors on Thursday, February 15th. Myst Online: Uru Live introduces all-new Ages and puzzles while fusing the social concepts of a traditional massively multiplayer online game with mystery and problem-solving facets. The game features elements unique to the Myst franchise such as books to teleport, exploration throughout immersive new Ages, and mind-challenging puzzles to solve as a group or alone (system requirements were unavailable). Myst Online: Uru Live is priced at $0.99 cents for the first month, after which players pay $9.95 per month. [images]

"Myst Online: Uru Live' is the most ambitious Myst experience we've ever created," said Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds and co-creator of Myst. "By developing an interactive, online world driven by intrigue and exploration instead of violence, massively multiplayer online gamers now have a choice unlike any of the other options."

Player choices, actions, and experiences for the first time in Myst help drive the ongoing storyline that expands and adapts on a continuous basis.

    $.99 first month only

I got really excited to see that the subscription would be $0.99 per month. However, that's the first month only. It's $9.95 regularly, and I think that has to do with a GameTap subscription, not necessarily Uru.

    NOT FOR MAC! (yet?)

As I suspected, Uru remains gated to Macintosh users. Check out the System Requirements listed at their website. To quote:

"Mac Requirements: System requirements for the Mac are currently being defined and more information will be released as soon as it is available. Thank you."

Want to guess why this problem continues? GameTap have written the game in DirectX 9, the Microsoft proprietary graphics API that has been, in part, designed to lock out Mac users and OpenGL software developers. I think the applicable neo-verb here is 'Microshafted'.

    Correction: Macintel Beta

There is a Macintel version of Uru Live in the works. There is NO SIGN of it being ready on the premiere date 2007-02-15. It remains vaporware. But at long last it looks like it might actually happen. Check the Uru Live Forums General Discussion area for further information. (Sorry PPC users, no chance of a compatible version).

GameTap is also proud to announce that a Macintosh compatible version of Myst Online is in active development by TransGaming Inc., which will bring the world of Uru to Macintosh users for the first time.

    Uru to Premiere on Mac

GameTap and Cyan Worlds, developer of “Myst Online: Uru Live”, are pleased to be able to bring the story of Uru to the Mac platform for the first time, powered by TransGaming’s Cider portability engine.

“The original Myst game premiered on the Mac,” said Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds and creator of Myst Online. “The Mac community has always been huge supporters of the Myst franchise and we’re thrilled that we will soon be able to invite them to the newest Myst experience.”

TransGaming Inc. is a leading developer of software portability products for the electronic entertainment industry. “The release of Myst Online for Mac represents the beginning of exciting new possibilities for Mac gamers,” stated Vikas Gupta, CEO and President of TransGaming, Inc. “We look forward to bringing many more great games to the Mac in coming months.”
