'iPod Monday' bar promo
Apple has ordered a downtown Des Moines (Iowa) bar to no longer use its "iPod Monday" promotion. The Cupertino-based company sent Clint Curtis, the operator of the Lift, a cease and desist e-mail to stop using the iPod name in its weekly event where customers share music via their iPods, according to The Associated Press. According to the report, the owner is "perplexed by the letter because he has never tried to hide his use of the iPod name." The report also says that Curtis tried mailing Apple to ask the company for permission to use the 'iPod' name in his weekly event. Curtis claims that he also spoke with Apple employees and never was told not to use the name, the report said. Apple has been aggressively protecting its iPod trademark, paying one woman last year to stop using the word "pod" in the name of a protective case she designed for laptop computers; the company also also asked a Japanese company to change the name of its "gPod" pleasure product.

share music via iPods

Its an illegal event, i can totally understand why Apple don't want the iPod brand be associated with spreading music on such an evening. I bet that sharing music was a bit more than just the headphones.

Misleading. It's obviously a bar where people can bring their own music and "DJ" for a set amount of time.
Duh.

They're losing their minds. How can they think that this is a good idea?

Maybe they should change the name of the event to "New Music Mondays"?

a bar in Scottsdale used to have an iPod night where the DJ would play your playlist off your iPod. I don't think they stopped because of Apple, but still I'm sure there are other bars that do this.
Maybe they should call it 'f*** Apple' night. I'm sure Microsoft would be thrilled if bars had a "Zune night". If there is anyone at MS with two brain cells to rub together, they'd take advantage of this opportunity to cast themselves as the good guys for once.
But that ain't gonna happen...

Zune night?

Sounds like a rather small affair if you ask me. DJ: "Hey dudes! Welcome to Zune night. If you two wanna get up here and spin your tunes for a few minutes, we can wrap this thing up by 8 and still get home in time to catch the Laker game."

sounds like some of Disney's infamous lawyer-goon tactics have rubbed off on Apple since Jobs joined the Disney board.

this is stupid. somebody maybe thinking about buying a zune or sandisk who doesn't know squat about any of them but does know there's a cool ipod night at the local pub is going to buy an ipod. if the guy at the bar now says "s**** 'em" the ipod night folks will have a bad taste in their mouth as well. who in their right mind would want to stop this kind of social impact? dumb dumber and downright idiotic.

just wondering, did the owners of this site get permission from Apple to use ipodnn.com? If not, can they expect a cease-and-desist letter from Apple's legal department?
I understand the necessity of protecting one's trademark, but how far does this s*** go, anyway???
