Apple, iPhone challenges at 3GSM expo

Apple and the 3GSM expo

Neonode has promised to best Apple's iPhone to scores with its upcoming touch-screen phones, even as attendees of next week's 3GSM phone expo ready themselves to directly compare their new phones against Apple's iPhone. A special discussion to be held at 3GSM is an even more telling demonstration of Apple's influence, PC World writes. Dubbed "Mobile Music: The Apple Factor," the conference has been formed solely to talk about the iPhone's effect on music phones and will count a Nokia marketing chief among its guests.

Analyst Nick McQuire of the Yankee Group observed that the discussion was taking place in no small part due to the iPod, as many companies fear that the music player's success could easily translate to strong iPhone sales and erode their own marketshares. "It's difficult to discount the carry-through success that Apple could have in the mobile arena," McQuire said.

    Wow!

This is great news, indeed!! Can you imagine the devices we're going to be seeing the next few years?? Admittedly, most will be utter c***, but think of what we can get if one or two competitors stepped up to really give Apple a run for it's money? I'm giddy at the thought!! Apple's kicking so much a**, and they're doing it with no competition, just people imitating their designs. With the iPhone, Apple took it to a new level, so hopefully we get some originality from the other device makers!

    The future looks fun!!

    agree

I'd rather have other makers step up to Apple's challenge than to have all the naysayers putting out their propaganda: "The iPhone is not what people want, so we will continue to market our same ol usual c***." Competition is always good.

    If it becomes real compe-

tition, you'll see it in the price. Admitedly, apple uses high quality materials and parts, and has a slew of patents, so it isn't all that likely that there will VERY comparable. However, i would assume that having mobile services such as the iPhone calls for may become more common. At the very least, I expect to see more VIDEO players/phones now that this is out. As ga-ga as people are about things like the Blackjack, the next step is to once again follolw the innovator. I give it 4-6 months before we see a real attempt of a competitor. Not this "we're making one too," from entities like MS.

    Do you concur?

    "Best iPhone to scores"?

I tried to parse that first sentence ("Neonode has promised to best Apple's iPhone to scores"), and all I could come up with was that Neonode did a presentation in front of "scores" of people at 3GSM in which they promised to "best" the iPhone.

The bizarre phrasing of the link did get me to read the article, though, if only to find out that Neonode was actually planning to "beat the iPhone to stores."

    Competition effects

I also think the competition is good, but for different reasons.

Apple doesn't need too much incentive to innovate and I'm sure other device makers will push envelopes that Apple can not push (ie tablets so far), but I want to see the service providers pushed. I want to see Verizon push AT&T to get better not Apple. Let the market show AT&T to give Steve even more freedom to innovate and for them to just concentrate on infrastructure and improvements in service and fidelity.

The most hopeful part of the keynote was to see the CEO's of companies describe partnerships with Apple as being real partnerships, not acquisitions or mergers. That is how open standards are formed and kept open. Not in merely yielding to MSoft "standards" and just going along with everyone else.

I'm sure other devices will start to look more like the iPhone just as Dells with Vista will start to look even more like Macs, but the quality is more than skin deep and a steady rise in market share is all we need in both realms for Apple.
