iPhone-like iSoftPhone

Xnet Communications has released iSoftPhone, an easy-to-use internet phone for Mac OS X using VoIP (Voice over IP) technology to provide full compatibility with clear voice quality with a sleek interface. A one-step configuration allows users to begin talking to others in seconds, according to the company, by simply dialing the number of the desired party or selecting them from an integrated Address Book. Users can create private telephone networks by adding multiple SIP providers, and the application is a Mac-only implementation built on a telephony engine. iSoftPhone is priced at $100, and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

    Echo

While this looks great I tried it and on a macbook pro the echo is terrible and makes it unusable. Hopefully they fix the echo problem

Unlike Eyebeam which has no echo .. now only if Eyebeam would update their software for intel macs

    the cool factor

While the concept works, it's really just a skin, and is piggy-backing off the iPhone hype (yes, I'm stating the obvious). Give me 3 hours and I can generate (not copy) the image files necessary for this. I'm surprise they didn't ultra detail a model of this in 3D to do some cooler stuff (animate flips, spins, vibrations, etc). How long has been it been since apple.com/iphone was posted? Certainly long enough for someone to scale the clean geometry and add on necessary image maps. A video file serving as the screen images can give you moving graphics and moving geometry all at once.

My verdict: It's a fun idea. It would make ppl in the future who are lucky enough to have the actual device feel right at home when making VOIP calls. BUT, if you're going to just copy and interface, for heaven sakes, go all out!

    Sorry about the

formatting that didn't work. Just another thought: would Apple include something like this when they ship the iPhone? It'd be simple enough with the phone running OS X...
