Apple files for bottom-loading drive patent

New Apple patent filings

The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office today published a continuation patent for Apple as well as two patent applications related to a 'bottom-loading' optical disc drive. The continuation patent, titled "Computer interface having a virtual single-layer mode for viewing overlapping objects," describes the Expose feature in Mac OS X to show and hide multiple windows simultaneously. The two new patent applications are titled "Access system for a portable device" and "Disk drive media access system," presenting readers with an overview of potential future notebooks that would implement a bottom-side optical disk drive to further slim down the portable computers.

The system would display an 'invert' icon indicating to users that the computer is entering an eject mode, displaying arrows accordingly to symbolize the action of inverting the notebook to eject the media. Future Apple notebooks could also contain a mobile motion module or "MMM," a triaxial gravitational force detector to provide protection for the laptop by detecting dangerous force-related events -- such as the laptop falling to the floor. Upon detecting such an event the system could instruct the hard drive to park the heads, thereby avoiding a dreaded 'head crash' which usually results in data loss.

    MMM?

Isn't that what the sudden motion sensor does already? What's the difference?

    well

could just be a new or better technology than the one currently used.

    Horrible usability!!!!

You have to turn the computer UPSIDE DOWN to eject a disc??? That is a ridiculous idea. The fact that they have to have a special icon or instruction to tell the user what to do is indicative of that. The only way it makes sense to put a disc in a laptop is sideways or top down (like a playstation, discman, etc.). And even the top down way would be kind of funny...

    re: horrible usability!!!

The patent describes this a feature for "portable devices", not just computers. This may be a feature that allows a device/computer to get thinner, or provide features in something we still don't know about. What if this is a great usability feature for a future product, where top loading or side loading isn't an option. They include things like special icons so they can cover all the aspects of the technology.

Also, from the patent: "Yet another important advantage of the present invention is that it valuably supports and services the historical trend of reducing costs, simplifying systems, and increasing performance."

    One possibility

One possibility would be a compact DVD player with the screen on the top, DVDs loaded from beneath, and no troublesome folding open assembly. Flipping over something that compact would be no big deal and you'd be watching it for two hours.

    Tablet

Doesn't necessarily have to be a "MacBook type device. As inkling said... "A compact DVD player with the screen on the top..."

Or... a Tablet format computer -- thinner than all other tablets, and using multitouch.

you wouldn't even really need Inkwell at this stage either. Just use the virtual keyboard.
