SoftCare releases K4 5.7
German outfit SoftCare has released K4 5.7, the latest revision of its proprietary editorial production system. K4 5.7 enhances the use of Adobe InDesign and InCopy, adding a new scripting interface for customer-specific processes. Users can automate virtually any function via AppleScript, JavaScript, or Visual Basic, according to the company, and K4 Web Editor 2.0 enables users to create articles specially formatted to fit in a Web browser. Documents are saved in the InCopy format but are produced using a Web interface, after which they are stored in the K4 database to be vetted. A new "easy query" mode allows users to browse a database to find files based on name, issue, section, or status. K4 5.7 is available from SoftCare's worldwide network of System Integrators, and a free upgrade is available to owners of K4 5.0 or later. SoftCare notes, however, that the K4 Web Editor is an optional purchase and will only work with K4 5.6 or 5.7. The Mac OS X version is usable in tandem with clients for other platforms including Windows, Linux, and Sun Solaris (pricing was unavailable).
