Nike Speed+ to obfuscate Nike+iPod?

Nike Speed+: iPod-less?
Sports gear manufacturer Nike will soon release a watch that could eliminate the need for the Nike+iPod kit, according to Electronista. Appearing only briefly on the European Nike website before being removed, the Nike Speed+ watch includes its own flash memory and wireless receiver that links with the Nike+ sensor. After a run, the watch connects to a computer through USB to upload distance and speed information to the Nikeplus.com website. An onboard LCD also tracks information useful to live runners such as the estimated calorie burn and pacing, the description said. No launch information accompanied the leak, but the inadvertent announcement suggests that Nike is approaching its Nike+ initative as a multi-level strategy of which the iPod is only a part. The sporting company recently announced its C.O.R.E. iPod backpack that offers music control through the strap. News of the still unreleased Amp+ bracelet for iPod users also surfaced late in 2006 and pointed to Nike's expansion beyond tracking equipment alone.

Wait 'til the iPhone is revealed to have all those features and work with any shoe... That'll teach 'em.
Actually, I can see this being better for people who don't like to listen to music while they work out (they exist!). Of course why these particular things don't record heart rate as well is beyond me.

The Nike + iPod integration is an added bonus to what everybody does, i.e., "listen to music while exercising". You don't buy a Nike + iPod so you can use the iPod primarily to monitor your exercise and only secondarily to use the iPod to listen to music.
Sure, there probably are people who don't care about listening to music while jogging and this watch very well may be for those people. But to say that this watch "eliminates the need" for an iPod is laughable. Like, HELLO, the iPod is for listening to music.

good for walkers

you can't wear the ipod all day, but if you walk a lot, it's at least a good re-inforcement to see how much you walk!!

Obfuscate?

Are you sure you mean obfuscate? "Render obscure, unclear, or unintelligible"?
Perhaps you mean "obviate" or "obsolete"? I thought journalists were supposed to have a working command of the English language.

Maybe supplement?

This watch certainly doesn't obfuscate anything. I don't see how it will obviate the iPod either. It will give me another use for my shoe sensor if I don't have a need to listen to my iPod but still want to record my walk/run stats.
