Panasonic AVCHD camcorders w/SD, 5.1

New Panasonic camcorders

Panasonic has announced a new pair of 3CCD camcorders that use the AVCHD format, according to Electronista. The HDC-SD1 is purportedly the smallest and lightest 3CCD HD camera in the world, using SDHC cards for storage as opposed to discs or a hard drive. The included 4GB card stores an hour of 1080p video, while the HDC-DX1 foregoes this convenience in favor of dual-layer DVDs, permitting users to record a maximum of 40 minutes of HD to a mini-DVD. Both cameras can record in 5.1 surround sound, since each is equipped with five separate microphones. Recording angles are adjusted automatically as users change focus and subject. Lenses on the cameras are 13-element Leicas, with image stabilizers built-in to reduce blur. The DX1 is priced at $1,400, while the SD1 will ship for $1,500. Both models are due to launch in March.

    AVCHD support?

Is there even support in Quicktime/iMovie/Final Cut for AVCHD yet??

If not, it's a waste of time :/

    MPEG-4

Considering AVCHD is a form of MPEG-4 it shouldn’t take Final Cut engineers too long before it can work with AVCHD.

Right now, not even pro editing software on the PC side is up to speed with AVCHD.

    AVCHD

The article says that is 1080p which is wrong. The specs for AVCHD are 1080i and 720p you can read on their website http://www.avchd-info.org/

Also the is list of companies that support that:

"The following companies have expressed support for the AVCHD format as of October 19th, 2006

Adobe Systems Incorporated ArcSoft, Inc. CANON INC. Canopus Co., Ltd. CyberLink Corporation Focus Enhancements, Inc. InterVideo, Inc. MainConcept AG Nero AG PIONEER CORPORATION PIXELA CORPORATION SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO.,LTD. SHARP CORPORATION Sonic Solutions Ulead Systems, Inc."

and Apple in on the list.

AVCHD uses MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video compression, which should be compatible with H.264 (you would think), but apparently is not, so you can't use iMovie or Final Cut Pro to edit the files. Tell me if I am wrong.

    wait until March

Four months from now, the list of products that support AVCHD could be ten times larger. It's dunderheaded to dismiss the product now.

Oh, wait, for a real example of what "dunderheaded" means, consider e2sync's post suggesting that all the microphones on the camera "will hear the same thing" because they are so close together. Perhaps e2sync's ears are 10 feet apart?

    So in other words....

... It's a waste of time. There's no point in paying a premium for features that won't be supported by the time price drops and the next generation of gizmo comes out.

Why would I pay extra now for this when I could wait 6mo and either get the next generation or pay less due to more competition in the segment as other makers release their AVCHD cams?
