Prudential on iPhone

Apple has reportedly begun iPhone production, and has already begun the production ramp on a small scale which should be ready for a full launch late in the first quarter of 2007 or early in the second. A music phone is likely to mark the launch with a more full-featured smartphone following one or two quarters later, according to Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora, who further anticipates the release of a widescreen iPod in the same time frame and claims evidence that Apple is hiring game designers. "Apple may have interest in entering the video game market longer-term," Tortora said, who raised his valuation of Apple stock from $74 to $87 based on sales estimates for the iPhone. The new phone could sell between 7 to 8 million units in 2007, according to predictions, and the introduction is also likely to benefit Broadcom as well as Intel, both of which have been singled out as potential part suppliers for Apple's cellular device, according to Electronista.

    the video game market???

Uh...I doubt that Apple would want to enter video games. There's not much evidence to support that, other than the iPod can now play scroll-wheel games!

    Strange.

    ummm...

"...Tortora said, who raised his valuation of Apple stock from $74 to $87 based on sales estimates for the iPhone..."

Or, perhaps the fact that the stock is currently around $91.50 had something to do with it!

    I really hope

that Apple releases this damn iPhone. I'm tired of all of the rumors everytime an event is coming up (how many times have we heard from analysts and the rumor sites alike that the iPhone is imminent?), and if they don't announce an iPhone, AAPL is going to tumble to the dismay of shareholders (again).

    according to Electronist…

MacNN, please stop saying "according to Electronista" in your articles. Everyone knows that it's your sister publication, and it adds little or no credence to the story, quite the opposite in fact.

I'm tired of all of the rumors everytime an event is coming up (how many times have we heard from analysts and the rumor sites alike that the iPhone is imminent?),

They have to postulate on these things. That way, when one is released (say, in 2011), MacNN can say "As we first reported back in 2003, Apple has announced their new iPhone..." Rumor sites don't care whether anything comes true, its all about generating buzz and hits by saying anything they can dream up, and then really broadcast the ones that come true, and try to hush up the wrong ones (the iWalk anyone? or that set-top box? Or Asteroid?).

But, really, the rumor sites get all their glory by releasing information 2 hours before Apple and call it 'breaking news' or a 'scoop'. (It may be a 'scoop', but its a useless scoop.) Whereupon the useless rumor-mongering of what might be (without any real idea of apple's release schedule) is just as useless, as people end up waiting forever for something that may not come.

BTW, keep in mind Apple has game support on the iPod. That may be where their developer money is going.
