Samsung launches three Ultra Edition media phones

Samsung Ultra Edition Trio

At the ITU 2006 conference, Samsung today revealed three phones in its high-end Ultra Edition line, each built for specific users. Leading the announcements was the i600 Ultra Messaging. Recently approved by the FCC, the i600 is the world's thinnest smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard at 11.8mm (0.46 inches), Samsung claims. The communicator is also one of the few of its size to integrate a forward-facing VGA camera for video chats and also supports the faster HSDPA mobile broadband standard. The i600 is set to debut in Asia and Europe as of early 2007, according to Samsung, though availability of the phone in North America is likely to follow.

The F300, also known as the Ultra Music, uses a distinctive shape that exchanges the flip or slider mechanisms of many music phones for a dual-face control design. While one face contains only music controls and a large LCD, another is committed to phone functions with a full-size number pad. The F300 further adds an FM radio and has a simplified sync process for sharing songs and playlists.

Most unique amongst the new releases is the F500 Ultra Video, according to Samsung. The handset is the first phone to support DivX videos and can also view formats normally reserved for computers, such as H.264. As with its Music complement, the Ultra Video features a dual face and uses its swiveling action to support the 2.4-inch screen when resting on a desk. The F500 has 400MB of internal storage for music or videos and can add microSD cards as large as 2GB; one of these cards holds as many as two full-length movies, the company says. Pricing and availability for the Music and Video phones have not been announced.
